Algae Studies
Everything about the ocean intrigues me. I revel in the weightlessness of a swim in the sea. I fear the darkness below me when I’m out of my depths. I jump when something slimy grazes my ankle. And yet, everything that exists below the surface I find beautiful. It shines, and it drifts, and it lets the currents and tides flow through them, around them, with them. I love walking along the shore in search of the treasures that are sure to have surfaced since yesterday. These seaweed studies are an ode to this world. They take something beautiful out of the darkness and cast it in brilliant colors and textures (handmade paper, thick oil pastels). I stick mostly to algae that can be found on our New England coastlines. And I hope these make you want to open your eyes underwater.

Our Coast
Enamored by our rocky coastline here in New England, I am constantly seeking out ways to convey it romantically, instead of just literally. I want the viewer to feel the same foggy obsession I do over the shapes of the rocks as they tumble into the sea. The way they leave tide pools brimming with extraordinary colors, just waiting for someone to notice them. The way they protect pockets of space where grasses grow and wildlife nests. I want to help you skip to the part where it feels like you’ve been staring out to sea for minutes—or hours—and you’ve gone a little crosseyed, like staring into a flame. Whether you’re from here or come here to enjoy a beach weekend, I want you to love our coast.

Garden Party
After moving into our home, I spent a year searching for something that I could hang over our dining table, which would invoke lively conversation, feelings of community, and the sense of abundance. I conjured what I believed felt like the sum total of all the elements of a great meal shared with good company: beautiful tablescapes, lush florals (arrangements or otherwise), and delicious ingredients. What resulted was an explosion of color and organically flowing brush strokes, dotted with edible goodies and gorgeous glassware and ceramics; in a few words: a Garden Party.

KELP DREAMS
During a summer spent living and working in Alaska, I went surfing in the frigid waters along the coastline of a volcano. The stunning beauty made catching waves unnecessary. However, I did catch one and fall, and below the surface, a vast tangled net of kelp forests grabbed at my ankles and held me underwater for a few moments longer than I would have liked. I dreamed about the dark world beneath the waves for weeks before I started envisioning them as these magical, dreamy, colorful worlds we knew nothing about. I found I could not stop myself from painting those otherworldly visions.

mini paintings
In August 2022, I began a series of mini (4x4”) acrylic paintings in an effort to practice painting from photographs. Having spent so much time traveling around the US and other countries, camera in tow, I had plenty to work with! I continue to expand this collection because they give me opportunities to improve my skills and to share more of what I’m capable of with my clients. As an added bonus, their small scale makes them more accessible pieces of art for clients who are just starting their collections, or for those who want just a small way to celebrate a place they love.
